Cycling series braves the wet and wind

Yesterday a hardy lot of cyclists turned up for the 2nd full lap time trial in Richmond Park. It turned out to be the most eventful night so far, not least because of thunderstorms:

Anyway, more fun next Tuesday. Meet at the car park by Kingston Gate for the evil double-hill time trial. Go on, you know you want to.

The Best of Vesta on Blackstaffe Day

On 9th August Vesta held its club regatta and celebrated the centenary of H.T. Blackstaffe winning the Olympic Sculls. Despite the grim weather we had an excellent turnout at the club in rowers and supporters.

The day officially began with the naming ceremony of the new men's eight. Pat Bowtell named the Filipi "Allister Bowtell" after our late Vesta member and quite rightly used an awful lot of champagne, 'Formula One' style, in the process.

Next came the 500m races in four categories. There were six entries each for the men's and women's novice singles, 12 boats in the mixed doubles and six scratch mixed eights.

Starz beat Liz Adams and Caroline Gooch to win the WNV 1x. Michael Hughes took the NV 1x against Ryan Kane who fell in, much to the amusement of a merciless Vesta balcony audience. Bond & Moneypenny proved that a love double beats an extra-marital lay, leaving Geluk & Barkensjo limping behind.

The racing highlight proved to be the final of the mixed scratch eights when the three-boat final ended in a win by one foot by Nathan's crew.

To round off an enjoyable morning, Sinead prepared a really splendid lunch of salmon cutlets and pots were presented.

The regatta was the idea of Dick Welch and he and Paul Baldwin put in a lot of time to make it happen, ably supported by Vicki and other senior members on the day. So thank you to them and to umpires, marshalls and participants!

A great club day was rounded off in fine style by a movie-star-themed party in the evening, which was ably organised by the Novice Men's squad, who are to be congratulated for all their hard work in decorating the club and running the evening. I believe Facebook is the place to find photos of Darth Vader, Ali G and Barbarella among others, but I couldn't resist putting Mr Incredible and Dorothy on the front page here!

The Vesta women did well at Henley Town & Visitors, bringing home pots for the women's novice eight, women's senior 3 eight and women's senior 3 single sculls. Nice one ladies!

The tug-of-war was great fun and Vesta provided the bulk of the competitors. Ironically it was the girls who had modestly refused to participate who were dragged in to make up numbers with two women from Mortlake and one from Cygnet that won the women's event. I'm sure those pots wil be given pride of place on the mantelpiece. The men put up a good show but lost to a well-organised (and surely practised) team from Cygnet.

The latest cycling time trial took place last night and once more we saw some phenomenal times. Charlie Blackman cruised in for the evening and set a blistering pace on the hill time trial equalling the tandem's time!

Don't forget the next time trial is another lap on Tuesday at 19:45 meeting at the bridge just past the golf course car park. See you there!
